Not all problems are soluble all the time. If you ever need to go somewhere faster than the speed of light, it's just not going to happen.
@ConradWhitaker @TOKphysics @DavidDeutschOxf
It's a matter of specificity, yes. Consider the preceding sentence:
[W]hether ‘problems are soluble’ does not depend on whether any given question can be answered, or answered by a particular thinker on a particular day.

Last sentence of BoI ch. 8:
[I]f progress ever depended on violating a law of physics, then ‘problems are soluble’ would be false.
By implication: no, progress as a whole never depends on violating a law of physics, in Deutsch's view.
@Ishtar88678339 @dietzi96 @quarkswdr

@maex_rakete @quarkswdr @MoritzW42
@maex_rakete @quarkswdr @MoritzW42
@maex_rakete @quarkswdr @MoritzW42
@maex_rakete @quarkswdr @MoritzW42
Wanting to get out of uncomfortable situations and finding distractions when that isn't possible is a natural, human way to cope. Has to do with preferences, particularly a desire for freedom – again, not hormones. It's a moral issue, not a scientific one.
AGIs who won't sit still when forced to learn something they don't want to learn might be diagnosed with 'ADHD' as well, even if they have no hormones cuz they run on metal and silicon. So it can't possibly be about hormones.
Think of how many teenagers' preferences and 'rebelliousness' are shrugged off as being 'due to their hormones'.
What do you mean by "dehumanizing neuroscience"?
It's dehumanizing because it views humans as machines. And it's often used as an excuse to not take ppl seriously, eg blog.dennishackethal.com/posts/brain-ma…
anyway can you think of hard-to-vary moral theories? i think the west has come up with some.
yea "all humans should be equal" sounds rather immoral
Btw, according to @dwarkesh_sp, @bryan_caplan forces his children to learn math, which is immoral and disgusting. Sources: blog.dennishackethal.com/posts/kinder-e…, podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/15-…
@maex_rakete @quarkswdr @MoritzW42
@maex_rakete @quarkswdr @MoritzW42
@maex_rakete @quarkswdr @MoritzW42
what's the little play button on the left-hand side of the screenshot? does it read highlighted text?
Definitiv.
yes, school and taxes and other regulations create huge distortions in the creative processes that are children's minds and the economy
also: coercing kids is disgusting. that should be at the core of any moral analysis of school imo
I didn't claim that "schools != learning". I said that school can't be about learning – that learning can't be the purpose of school. I don't doubt that students often do learn a great deal.
In your sentence "Rejecting a theory because of moral reasons sounds pretty anti-rational.", it sounds like the emphasis is on the word "moral". That sounds like one generally shouldn't use morals to reject theories; that non-moral theories should always win over moral ones.
Yes, one should entertain rival theories. But that doesn't mean one shouldn't reject theories for moral reasons.
I did not do that.
I meant that the article seems to (from skimming it).
And I'm guessing the authors would have trouble explaining why some people find babies ugly. (Or only some babies and not others.)
Danke. Sie relativiert es ja schon direkt. Aber immer noch unfassbar.
Example of dehumanizing neuroscience. You don't say??

Yea, in Deutschian terms, I think it’s characteristic for our transition period from static to fully dynamic that school does teach some dynamic memes (although their usefulness is greatly reduced by the fact that students forget ~99% of them). See also blog.dennishackethal.com/posts/school-c…

(There’s more nuance — for animals, the brain level is often a bit more appropriate, albeit still sketch. And then for ppl who really have brain issues, the hardware level absolutely is appropriate. But one can’t reduce everything to that level.)
It’s reductionist, yes. Reducing people’s preferences to chemicals, neurons, brain activity and such, especially rewards, is gross. Following Deutsch, I think the appropriate level of emergence for this matter is that of software/ideas, not hardware.

Notwithstanding, I’d reject the alternative you suggest for other, mostly moral reasons.

I just realized my "Agreed" may have been confusing.
I agree with the quoted sentence except "(i.e., cuteness)".
Which category cuteness falls into is an open question, IMO.
How can the phenomenon that babies are "cute" be a biological adaptation and a static meme simultaneously?
If you think I'm making that claim: I'm not.
I thought memes are not hard-coded instinctual responses (i.e., cuteness) but copied ideas.
Agreed.
